Emily Beuckman Brings Mobile Sensory Paths to Long Elementary
January 17, 2025
Today, we’re celebrating Emily Beuckman, School Counselor at Long Elementary School, for receiving yoga mats, paints, and brushes to create Mobile Sensory Paths for every classroom at Long.
Sensory Paths are mobile tools designed to help students manage emotions and energy. This year, Long rebranded its "calm corners" as "R&R" spaces, with these sensory mats playing a vital role in helping students feel calm and ready to learn.
Emily and her co-counselor introduced the Sensory Paths during classroom lessons in the first two months of school, incorporating the Zones of Regulation. They gathered students’ input on the mat designs, finalized the plans, and involved students in painting the mats—an engaging process that fostered creativity and ownership. Once completed, the mats were placed in the R&R spaces, providing students with a personalized coping tool they helped create
This innovative project gave students a voice in developing self-regulation strategies, empowering them to feel invested in their learning and emotional well-being.
Congratulations Emily!
